Seafarers' Quarter
Seafarers and their families settled in the north-west of the city where the port used to be. Here you find their church „St. Jacobi“ with its beautiful Renaissance organs and medieval wall paintings. The „Schiffergesellschaft“, the beautifully decorated former guild-hall of the seafarers and sailors, is situated directly opposite the church.

Social Institutions in the Historic Town
One of the social institutions in the medieval city of Lübeck is the “Heiligen-Geist-Hospital”. From
the 13th century on it used to be a refuge for the old and sick.
It still is an old people's home. Parts of it are a museum.
In the beginning of December the famous Christmas market takes place here for ten days.

Craftsmen's Quarter
Small houses, narrow streets, alleyways and courtyards await you around „St. Aegidien- Kirche“ in the former craftsmen's quarter.

Merchants' Quarter
„St. Marien“ was the first brick church built in Gothic style. With its two spires is overlooks the political and economic centre of the old merchant city: the market place and the town hall.

Cathedral District
The cathedral is the oldest brick church in Lübeck. Its foundations date from the time of Henry the Lion. Boatmen who brought salt from Lüneburg to Lübeck via the Stecknitz- Kanal lived around the Cathedral („Dom“). Till today this area is full of alleyways, bars and idyllic corners which deserve to be discovered.
